The 44th Hong Kong Film Awards will be held on 19 April 2026 (Sunday) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Following the earlier release of the ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best New Director’ nominees’ portraits in this year’s commemorative booklet, the Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA) today (26 March) has unveiled the styling photos of the ‘Best Actor’ nominees (according to the nomination list order) Louis KOO, CHEUNG Kai Chung Louis, LEUNG Ka Fai Tony and Carlos CHAN, as well as the ‘Best Actress’ nominees MA Li, Natalie HSU, Fish LIEW, ZHANG Ziyi and Fala CHEN.

Louis KOO, who has been nominated multiple times and won ‘Best Actor’ at the 37th Hong Kong Film Awards, is double-nominated this year for his performances in “Behind the Shadows” and “Back to the Past”. In the former, he plays a private investigator who specialises in relationship disputes and sees through human nature, balancing a calm professionalism with a sense of humour while revealing the character’s inner vulnerability; in the latter, he reprises the beloved “HONG Siu-lung”, a time‑traveller navigating complex historical turmoil and personal destiny, showing a more restrained and mature side to the character’s growth after many trials.
Four‑time ‘Best Actor’ winner LEUNG Ka Fai Tony is nominated again this year for the crime action film “The Shadow’s Edge”. He plays the gang leader “Wolf King”, the mastermind behind a team with strong counter‑surveillance skills, projecting a refined yet unfathomable villain whose presence infuses the film with a suffocating atmosphere. CHEUNG Kai Chung Louis receives his second ‘Best Actor’ nomination for “Golden Boy”, a self‑funded project in which he plays a rising boxing star who ends up in prison by accident; after his release, he must both return to the ring to chase his unfinished dream and learn to reconnect with his long‑separated son, embodying perseverance and the struggle between father‑son affection and personal redemption. Carlos CHAN earns his first spot in the ‘Best Actor’ top five for “Someone Like Me”, playing a volunteer who provides sexual services for people with disabilities and develops a hard‑to‑define relationship with the trauma‑scarred heroine, conveying with sincerity and subtlety a cheerful exterior masking inner wounds, and a gentle, healing bond between two damaged souls.
MA Li makes her first bid for ‘Best Actress’ at the Hong Kong Film Awards with “The Dumpling Queen”, adapted from a true story. She portrays a single mother who brings her two daughters to Hong Kong to start over and eventually builds a career selling dumplings, rising from street hawker to founder of her own brand, vividly capturing a grassroots woman’s resilience and “Hong Kong spirit” in the face of hardship. Another first‑time Best Actress nominee, Fala CHEN breaks into the final five with “Peg O’My Heart”, playing a woman long torn between career and family who is forced by a case tied to her past to confront buried guilt and trauma; with delicate acting she embarks on a journey to uncover the truth and forgive herself, exposing cracks beneath her calm facade and weaving a story of atonement and rebirth.
Natalie HSU receives her second ‘Best Actress’ nomination for “My First of May”, playing Tang Ci, who has suffered from a serious illness since childhood and is gradually losing mobility, left with only her ring finger to create and express herself. The role demands precise control of physical limitations and psychological shifts, and she balances strength, optimism and vulnerability while highlighting the emotional ties between father, daughter and caregivers. Fish LIEW advances from past ‘Best Supporting Actress’ recognition to contend for ‘Best Actress’ with “Someone Like Me”, playing Ah Mui, a woman with cerebral palsy striving for independent living, who meets Ah Kin through an organisation that offers sexual services to people with disabilities; her honest and brave performance explores the desire of minorities for intimacy and bodily autonomy. Two‑time ‘Best Actress’ winner ZHANG Ziyi gains her fifth nomination with “She’s Got No Name”, based on a Republican‑era case of a woman accused of killing and dismembering her husband; she plays the accused wife, whose identity and motives are repeatedly rewritten through police investigations, media reports and witness testimonies, shifting fluidly between composure and breakdown to expose the dark realities of gendered power and domestic violence.
