Best Supporting Actress: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BRy2c7LES/

This year’s nominees for the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ awards comprise ten talented actors from six outstanding films. The Last Dance receives the most nominations with four nominees, namely Tommy CHU, Paul CHUN Pui, Rachel LEUNG and Rosa Maria VELASCO. The film Twilight of The Warriors: Walled In follows with two nominations for Louis KOO and Philip NG. Other four nominees are LO Chun Yip from Montages of a Modern Motherhood, Stephy TANG from Love Lies, Jo KOO from PaPa, and Maggie Li Lin Lin from All Shall Be Well.

Among these five nominees, Paul CHUN Pui boasts the most experience. He has won the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ title by the Hong Kong Film Awards twice, at the 6th and 13th editions, respectively. This time, he is recognized for his role as a funeral business partner and master of exhumation in The Last Dance. His meticulous performance portraying the role’s professionalism in handling ancestral remains, as well as the poignant emotion of rushing to Hong Kong and mourning a close friend at the funeral home, have left a lasting impression on the audience. Tommy CHU is another contender for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ from The Last Dance. He plays a mediocre and indecisive son who, after failing to excel in his studies, has no choice but to follow his father’s footsteps to become a Taoist priest. In early March, he was recognized as ‘Best Supporting Actor’ at the 2024 Annual Awards of the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild. He also received nominations for the same title at the 61st Asia-Pacific Film Festival last year and the recently concluded 18th Asian Film Awards. He aspires to stage on the Hong Kong Film Awards on 27th April to claim this prestigious accolade for the first time.

Louis KOO, a former Best Actor awardee at the Hong Kong Film Awards, has also received two nominations for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ in the past. This year, he is recognized for his role as the local crime lord in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. He portrays a legendary figure in the underworld regarded for his profound loyalty and exceptional martial art skills. Despite battling advanced lung cancer, he fiercely confronts his enemies, and is determined to protect the son of his deceased friend and safeguard the walled City community. Philip NG plays a standout gangster villain in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. This character has earned him a nomination for the first time at the Hong Kong Film Awards. His appearance with long curly black hair and sunglasses accentuates the arrogant personality of the role who possesses formidable, almost invulnerable skills, and shows ruthless determination when combating against his rivals, vowing to eliminate them. NG candidly remarked that, as a martial artist and action director, he has never expected his first nomination is in the acting category which, to him, is a delightful surprise.

LO Chun Yip plays a novice father in Montages of a Modern Motherhood, who is a male chauvinist believing it is natural for men to earn a living while leaving all parenting duties to the wives. His authentic and down-to-earth acting has secured him a seat among the top five nominees for ‘Best Supporting Actor’.

Among the five nominees for ‘Best Supporting Actress’, Maggie LI Lin Lin excels with the most acting experience. After a lengthy break, she shines in All Shall Be Well playing an older lesbian who has a long-term relationship with her partner Petra AU Ga Man. This character contrasts sharply with her real life, where she is married and enjoys a large family. However, her performance is both natural and sincere, earning her nominations for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ at both the 18th Asian Film Awards and the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards, her first time in over fifty years of artistry.

In The Last Dance, the two nominees for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category, Rachel LEUNG and Rosa Maria VELASCO are once again in contention. LEUNG, the previous year's winner for the same title, acts a lesbian who, after the passing of her close friend, desperately tries to keep away from her friend's husband so that she could bid a final farewell to her at the viewing room of the funeral parlour. Rosa Maria VELASCO portrays a miserable mother who decides to preserve the corpse of her son through vacuum sealing, hoping that future medical advancements will bring him back to life. As she looks on the mortician and the Taoist priest working on her son's during the embalming process, her tears flow freely, expressing her deep longing and sorrow for her deceased son.

Like VELASCO, Jo KOO also plays a mother in PaPa. Her character evolves from a young woman dating the male lead to a married mother, ultimately tragically killed by her schizophrenic son. For a memorable scene in the movie where she brings her husband to meet her parents at her hometown, she needs to learn to speak the dialect Hakka not known to her in just a few days, showcasing her linguistic talent. She was awarded ‘Best Supporting Actress’ at the 2024 Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Annual Awards for this role.

The final nominee for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ is Stephy TANG for her role in Love Lies. She plays a ‘scriptwriter’ for a con artist group, designing identities and personas for the scammers under her guidance. Despite being an expert of deception, she remains idealistic about love, often showcases herself in a seductive image. Her impressive acting is exemplified by her eye-catching and innovative performance.
