Hong Kong Film Awards Association Reveals “Best New Performer” Nominees’ Styling Portraits For The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards Special Booklet

The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards, the renowned international Chinese-language film industry event will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 16th April, 2023. The organizer, Hong Kong Film Awards Association (HKFAA) will publish a special booklet to mark the event. HKFAA has invited the award nominees of the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards, including “Best Director”, “Best Actor and Actress”, “Best Supporting Actor and Actress”, “Best New Performer” and “Best New Director” to participate in the portraits shooting session. Today, HKFAA released the styling portraits of the four "Best New Performer" nominees, namely Edan LUI, Jer LAU, Henick CHOU and Sahal ZAMAN; and announced this year’s special booklets are now available for pre-ordering online. Members of public can place orders via this link. The published booklets will be issued in early April before the awards ceremony and will be sold at designated bookstores and theaters, while the selling details are to be further announced.

Quite a number of new talents emerged in the Hong Kong film industry last year. They all performed well in various local films that boasted good audience feedback and handsome box office records. Edan LUI, a member of the popular boy band MIRROR, was affirmed by judges for his performance in the comedy Chilli Laugh Story and the drama film Hong Kong Family that won him twin nominations for the “Best New Performer” award. Lui said that although he played son in both films, the personalities of these two characters are completely different. Lui remarked that it was a continual trial and exploring attempt when acting for Chilli Laugh Story, his debut on the big screen. In his second film Hong Kong Family, as an inexperienced actor, playing the son who ran away from home after a big quarrel with his father was a big challenge to him because of the complex emotions involved.

Another member of MIRROR, Jer LAU, who was nominated for "Best Original Film Song" as a lead singer last year, contends for the "Best New Performer" award this year for his participation in Mama’s Affair. With music as the main axis of his career development, he performed an outstanding student with serious and self-centered character in his first film which he mentioned was a big contrast to his own cheerful and relaxed personality.

Unlike the two MIRROR competitors, Henick CHOU has received formal acting training. In A Light Never Goes Out, he acted as a neon sign-making apprentice who lacks family care, lives in poverty and has to stay overnight in a 24-hour fast-food restaurant. For this “Best New Performer” nomination, Henick CHOU is particularly grateful to the film leading actress Sylvia CHANG for her guidance in and sharing of acting skills, giving him rooms to unleash his potential.

The last nominee Sahal ZAMAN is the first ever South Asian actor nominated in the history of the Hong Kong Film Awards. He was only ten years old when he filmed The Sunny Side of the Street. This Pakistani novice boy displayed authentic emotions and showed no fright when acting with veteran actor Anthony WONG. His brilliant performance already earned him a nomination for the "Best New Performer" award at the Golden Horse Awards earlier in 2022.

The results of the "Best New Performer" Award together with the winners of the other 18 competitive awards categories will be announced at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards presentation ceremony on 16th April. HKFAA announced that audio description and sign-language interpretation services provided by the Hong Kong Society for the Blind and HKSL From Deaf Star, respectively will be available for the programme of the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards for another year. Both services enable the visually and hearing impaired and those in need can enjoy the presentation ceremony without barriers, and, to share the joy and heartfelt emotions of the award winners in real time.

The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards is well supported and sponsored by various organizations, including Financial Supporter “Create Hong Kong” and “Film Development Fund”; Venue Sponsor “The Leisure and Cultural Services Department”; Official TV Production Partner and Broadcaster “ViuTV” and “MakerVille”; Official Limousine Sponsor “BMW”; Official Sponsor of Fragrances, Makeup and Skincare “Charlotte Tilbury”; Dazzling Sponsor “Puyi Optical”; English Magazine Partner “Tatler” and Chinese Magazine Partner “Vogue Hong Kong”.
